The Helping Zebra

Our humanitarian projects
in Arusha, Tanzania

Welcome to the page dedicated to the humanitarian projects of The Helping Zebra, an organisation committed to making a real difference in Arusha and its surroundings in Tanzania. Through a variety of solidarity missions, we offer international volunteers a unique opportunity to get involved in the field alongside local communities. Whether you are motivated by a desire to help, to share your skills or simply to enrich your personal journey, each mission is designed to create a lasting impact.

Our projects cover several areas essential to local development: health, education, child protection, animal welfare, construction and agriculture. These sectors have been chosen in close collaboration with local partners in order to respond to real needs, while respecting the culture and dynamics of the community. Each volunteer participates in a useful and educational activity, while discovering the human, cultural and natural wealth of the region.

Joining The Helping Zebra means embarking on a meaningful human adventure while exploring Tanzania in a different way. In addition to the missions, discovery activities are offered during free time: safaris, hikes, cultural encounters… A way to combine solidarity and exploration in a safe and caring environment.

Our vision: responsible volunteering, rooted in local reality

At The Helping Zebra, we believe in meaningful, respectful and useful volunteering.
Our mission is simple: to build human bridges between motivated volunteers and local projects in Tanzania that have expressed specific needs.

We know that volunteering abroad raises questions, particularly about its real impact and the professionalisation of certain organisations. That is why we have chosen to operate with transparency, local roots and ethical standards.

What drives us:

  • Long-term partnerships with local projects, chosen for their reliability and genuine commitment to communities.
  • Support before, during and after the assignment, so that each volunteer understands the challenges on the ground and acts with sensitivity and kindness.
  • A human and personalised approach, far removed from voluntourism or standardised experiences.
  • A local presence in Arusha, which allows us to monitor projects on a daily basis and stay connected to local realities.

We believe that quality engagement requires organisation, time and resources. That is why our structure is professional: to ensure that volunteering is supervised, transparent and beneficial for all parties.

The Helping Zebra is not about ‘doing things for others’ — it is about humbly supporting promising local initiatives.

Additional costs

Volunteer projects in the medical and animal sectors require additional costs related to specific supervision and necessary equipment.

These additional costs ensure optimal conditions for your assignment and quality support in the field.

The areas of our
missions in Tanzania

Medical

Volunteering in Tanzania in the medical sector
Our medical projects allow volunteers to assist local staff in clinics or hospitals in Arusha. Depending on your skills, you can help with basic care, participate in awareness campaigns or support the daily management of health facilities. These missions are ideal for students or health professionals who want to gain hands-on experience while contributing to improving local health conditions.
Additional costs to be expected for the medical sector.

Schools

Volunteering in Tanzania in the education sector

In primary schools and nurseries, volunteers support teachers in supervising pupils, leading educational activities and improving infrastructure. The focus is on learning English, educational games and developing children’s self-confidence. These missions help to strengthen the link between education and a sustainable future for Tanzanian youth.

Orphanage

Volunteering in Tanzania in the orphanage sector
Orphanage projects involve supporting children in their daily lives, giving them attention, listening to them and organising fun activities. Volunteers also help to organise communal life: meals, hygiene, games and educational support. These moments of sharing have a profound impact on the children, while offering volunteers an intense human experience.

Animals

Volunteering in Tanzania in the animal sector
For animal lovers, our missions in shelters or care centres provide an opportunity to help feed, care for and protect animals in distress. This may involve dogs, cats, donkeys or wild animals, depending on the project. Volunteers also contribute to raising awareness among local populations about animal welfare and protection.
Additional costs to be expected for the animal sector.

Building

Volunteering in Tanzania in the construction sector
The construction or renovation projects involve schools, orphanages, sanitary facilities or houses for families in need. No technical skills are required, just motivation and energy! These very practical missions allow you to see the impact of your actions on a daily basis and to participate in sustainable projects for communities.

Agriculture

Volunteering in Tanzania in the agriculture sector

Our agricultural projects are part of a drive towards food self-sufficiency and sustainable development. You can help with planting, crop maintenance, vegetable garden construction or training in ecological techniques. These missions promote the sharing of know-how while strengthening food security for local families.
