Wondering what a day on a mission with The Helping Zebra is like? Here’s a glimpse into a balanced daily routine of action, immersion and discovery, designed for young European volunteers.
8:00 a.m. – Wake up and enjoy a local breakfast
The day gets off to a gentle start with breakfast shared in the volunteers’ house: fresh fruit, homemade bread, Tanzanian tea or coffee. This is an opportunity to chat with the other participants and coordinators.
9:00 a.m. – Departure for the morning mission
Depending on the project, volunteers go to a school, community centre or clinic. Mornings are often spent providing educational support, running workshops (art, English, educational games) or renovating buildings.
12:30 p.m. – Group lunch
Lunch is prepared by the local team, often consisting of rice, fresh vegetables and meat or fish. It is a time to relax, chat and share.
2:00 p.m. – Continuation of the mission or rest time
The afternoon may continue with additional activities: hygiene awareness in villages, community gardening, visits to families. Some days are more free, allowing young people to rest, read or interact with the local population
5:00 p.m. – Cultural activity or free time
The Helping Zebra regularly offers activities: traditional dance classes, introductory Swahili lessons, hikes in the hills, visits to local markets… Everyone can choose to participate or relax.
7:00 p.m. – Friendly dinner and evening gathering
Dinner is often followed by evening activities: group discussions, games, African storytelling around the fire, or simply a quiet moment under the stars.
Each day is an adventure in itself, combining commitment, learning and fun. A balanced rhythm that allows each young person to flourish.
